Best UIUC Graduation Photo Locations 2026
The moment has arrived and it is time to celebrate your hard work and the end of this chapter. Congratulations on your graduation. I know there are still a thousand things to take care of, and I want to help you get your photo session planned so you can focus on everything else leading up to graduation.
Choosing the best spot for your graduation photos can feel overwhelming. There are so many locations, some very well known and others that feel like hidden gems. Here is a list of my favorite locations and why I would recommend each one.
Alma Mater
This is probably the most iconic landmark on campus. However, be prepared because lines can get quite long, especially as graduation week approaches. I recommend checking the wait time ahead of time through this live channel:
Unfortunately, renovations in that area are not fully finished yet, so keep in mind there may be some visual distractions in the background.
Main Quad
One of my favorite locations on campus. Here you really get a bit of everything. Beautiful buildings with charming architectural details inside and out, a large open lawn surrounded by trees that creates a very natural atmosphere, Foellinger Auditorium on one side and the Illini Union on the other. I highly recommend this location if you are planning a session with multiple spots within a short amount of time.

Foellinger Auditorium
Located in the Main Quad, this is one of the most iconic buildings for graduation photos. I love shooting here because I can always count on the photos turning out beautiful. It may look like just a façade at first glance, but there are many elements to work with when posing. The stairs, the lampposts, and the large balcony all create great visual variety.
Keep in mind this is a very popular location, so we may need to wait a few minutes to capture the exact photo we want.
Engineering Quad
Just across the street from the Main Quad we find another incredible open space for photos.
With buildings like CIF, the Beckman Institute and the Electrical and Computer Engineering Building, we can create many different looks within the same location.
You do not need to belong to this college to choose this spot. Over time I have discovered incredible hidden corners here that feel very neutral and beautiful without immediately shouting Engineering.
South Quad / Bell Tower
The third Quad on campus and probably the quietest one. It has a large green lawn and a very open space that allows us to capture the sky beautifully in the background.
This location is perfect for photos with a very clean backdrop. It works especially well for movement shots, walking photos or playful moments that feel free and natural.
During April and May the lavender around the Bell Tower blooms, adding a gorgeous pop of color to your photos.
Japan House and Arboretum
A little farther from the center of campus, but definitely what I would call a hidden gem. The gardens and different areas within the arboretum are stunning, surrounded by trees and wide open spaces that make it feel like the entire place is just for you.
I especially recommend this location if you prefer photos with a more neutral background without the iconic university buildings. If you are visiting from another university or college, this location is perfect because it keeps the focus entirely on you.
Krannert Center for the Performing Arts
You might know it as that place with the white stairs, but it is much more than that.
The building has a strong and beautiful architectural presence that feels very iconic to the Midwest. Because we can move through different levels of the structure, we can create amazing compositions, especially during sunset.
The building itself is stunning and there are many great corners to work with. The windows reflect beautiful light and the lampposts add interesting shapes to the photos.
Hallene Gateway
With plenty of natural light and the framing created by the structure itself, this location is perfect for cap tosses, champagne pops and those iconic graduation walks with the fountain in the background.
Another big plus is that we can capture the Illinois 1867 sign right at the beginning of the pathway. This allows us to include three iconic elements in one composition.
Because this is one of the most popular spots for graduation photos, lines can sometimes get long. Keep that in mind when choosing your session date and time.
Alice Campbell Alumni Center Fountain
Just behind the Gateway we find the largest fountain on campus.
During April and May the fountain is surrounded by flowers, which adds a beautiful seasonal touch to the photos. During graduation week the university dyes the water orange, so keep that in mind if you prefer a more natural look without the color.
Do not skip the building right next to the fountain. The Alice Campbell Alumni Center is also incredible. It has a modern interior design and a unique spot where diplomas hang from the ceiling.
University Sign on Wright Street
Did you know there are University of Illinois signs placed around campus. They are small hidden gems that often go unnoticed because they sit quietly on the corners that mark the campus boundaries.
This one on Wright Street is one of my favorites. It sits in a beautiful area with great light and classic UIUC architecture in the background, which allows us to capture a wide photo with a very balanced composition.
Your College Building
Many of the locations mentioned above are great for showing Illini pride. But what if we make your photos even more personal.
Taking photos at your college building can make your session feel more meaningful. This could be the main entrance, a garden area like the one at the Business Instructional Facility, or even a classroom where you spent many hours studying.
The Libraries
The Main Library is easily one of the most loved indoor locations by students.
There are so many photo opportunities here. We can capture classic and elegant photos on the Main Library stairs, in study rooms, or between the book aisles.
Do not forget about Grainger Engineering Library and Funk ACES Library. Both are also excellent options for unique indoor photos.
Memorial Stadium
Now we arrive at the sporty part of the list, and there is no better place to start.
Memorial Stadium is an incredible location that gives your photos a very elegant and clean look with all the focus on you.
Important note. The stadium is not always open. Each year the university assigns one week for students to enter and take graduation photos. In 2026 it will be between May 4 and May 8 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Make sure to sign up for a time slot if you want photos here.
Grange Grove Gate
Just outside Memorial Stadium we find another fantastic location featuring the iconic Block I.
This spot is full of university pride. You have the Illini letters in the stadium windows, the Block I on the gate and the Grange Grove title above the columns. It does not get much more UIUC than this.
I especially recommend this location for champagne pops or larger group photos.
Any sport related location connected to your team or activities
Do not forget the activities and sports that were part of your college journey.
Whether it is the tennis courts, track and field areas, baseball fields, football fields or soccer stadiums, these photos are a great way to make your session more personal.
They are full of energy and movement and can lead to very fun or even editorial looking photos.
Downtown Champaign
Finally, I do not want to forget students who prefer a different kind of atmosphere.
If you studied at another campus, another school, or simply prefer something less academic, Downtown Champaign is a great option. We can take photos walking through the streets, visiting bookstores or cafés, or even stopping by a bar where you shared good memories with friends.
We can also photograph near the old cinema and iconic buildings like City Hall. This area is perfect for elegant photos with a strong urban vibe.
