5 Tips from a Wedding Photographer

From my more than 10 years of experience as a photographer, here are a few tips I’ve gathered and want to share with all brides and grooms who are getting ready for their big day. I know it can feel overwhelming, which is why I narrowed it down to five easy and short tips to help you remember what this day is really all about.

I. Trust your photographer

The more you share, the more the photos will feel like you. Tell your photographer your love story, not only how you met, but also the small details. What is it that you love about one another? Is there any special trait your partner has that you don’t want the photographer to miss?

Share more about your personality as well. What do you both enjoy? How would you describe yourselves, your personal taste, and your preferences? What is truly important to you? What are you dreaming about for your wedding day?

II. Prioritize emotions

Of course we all want the perfect photos, but trust me, you, as you are, are already perfect. Loosen up a little and don’t be afraid to relax, laugh, and get lost in the moment. Just enjoy your wedding day. Hug, cry, laugh! Allow yourself to express whatever your heart desires. I promise the photos will look amazing.

III. Don’t over schedule your wedding day

Set a side at least 1 hour for your bride & groom/groom & groom/ bride & bride portraits This will allow your photographer to capture a greater variety of poses, compositions, creative shots, and locations. Plus, you and your partner will definitely appreciate and enjoy the quiet alone time you’ll get during such a busy day.

IV. Movement tells a story

Not only during the posed photos, but throughout the entire day. I often see brides or even guests stop mid-conversation, stop laughing, and become very stiff as soon as they notice the photographer. Some of my favorite photos, the ones that honestly bring in new clients, are the ones that feel real, candid, and free.

V. The small moments are the biggest

The first time the mom of the bride sees his little girl, the groom gets help by his dad put on his suit, when the best friend from elementary schools drops the first tear, those fast but so special moments are treasure when looking back.
The little details will be remembered forever, so allow yourself to enjoy every second. React however your heart wants, if you want to scream, laugh, or cry, do it!
But most importantly, don’t miss on them just because of the tight time schedule or wanting everything to be robotic planned out. Allow people to be people, to help, to cheer, to be surprised and react.
