How to Pose Naturally for your Graduation Photoshoot
Feeling a little awkward and nervous in front of the camera is completely normal. These tips will help you pose comfortably and confidently.
Here are 7 tips to prepare yourself for your graduation photoshoot.
Looking for triangles
Have you heard this before? Surely if you watched ANTM you remember this phrase, but unlike how badly that show has aged, this advice is actually useful!
For some reason, the eyes are naturally drawn to triangles in the body. But there’s a bit more science behind it than just putting your hand on your hip. We can create these angles with all the joints in the body. My tip: relax and let your body fall in whichever way feels most comfortable and natural to you. Think about it—sitting with your arms and legs completely straight isn’t our default choice, right?
During the session, imagine your body is so light and soft when ever you are possing you are resting on a invisible cloud. Even when crossing your arms, position them and your hands gently. When holding your accessories, do it in a soft, effortless way. Likewise, if you rest your head on your hand, tilt your face gently instead of fully pressing down to avoid creating wrinkles in your skin.
Now that you’ve mastered taking the weight off your arms and hands, you’re ready to pose and try out different combinations.
Relax Your Shoulders and Jaw
Most tension shows in these areas. Take a deep breath before each pose—your posture and expression will instantly look more natural.
Shift Your Weight to One Leg
Standing with all your weight evenly distributed can look stiff. A slight shift to one side creates a more flattering shape.
Move Between Shots
Slow movements—like fixing your hair, adjusting your gown, or lightly walking—create candid moments that feel effortless and real.
Use Your Hands Naturally
Hold your cap, toss your gown, play with your tassel, hold flowers, or simply keep one hand in your pocket. Avoid letting your hands hang stiffly by your sides.
A little bit of everything
Smile, But Also Try Serious Expressions. A mix of expressions gives your gallery variety. Natural laughs, soft smiles, and confident, editorial-style poses all look great.
Practice at home
The mirror will be your best friend, practice the following tips in front of it, learn your angles and best poses. Sometimes even the most common poses might not be the ones you feel most comfortable with, so practice and experiment to see what feels most you.
